Semana Santa

, Seville

The Semana Santa (Holy Week) is one of the biggest events of the year in Seville. This year it took place from April 2 to April 9.

During the whole day and every day of that week a lot of people with uniforms and hats walk through the streets while carrying religious sculptures or images.
I know it's a religious event, but as I'm not super interested in that I'll leave the rest of the explanation to the Wikipedia page Holy Week in Seville.
It also looks a bit creepy when you see the processions because of the Capirote they're wearing. It reminds of a group I don't even want to mention (but they have nothing to do with the Holy Week).

I was thinking I'd watch the people like once or twice so that at least I would have seen it once. Which I did. The first time even involuntarily. Well, every time was involuntarily, actually. The house I'm living in is very central and on the first day of the week I wanted to meet a friend to have a pizza around the cathedral. Big, BIG mistake.

I couldn't even leave my street as there was a procession going on, so I tried the other end, but soon after I encountered the next one. All streets in the right direction were blocked. So I watched and waited. And waited. Until after what felt like half an hour or something everyone passed and I could finally continue. Soon after there would come the next one, though, and then another one and another one.

Finding the way through that felt like I was in a labyrinth, but there would actually be no way of finding the exit. It was so annoying that I strongly considered going back home, but what would I not do to have some good pizza (and, well, to see my friend ;)).

So I fought my way through it and what would normally take me 15 minutes to walk now took me over one hour. And the way back took even a bit longer.
After that day I decided to stay home for the rest of the time and chill in the sun on the rooftop, which I always love doing anyway.

I'm sure the event is nice for the people who are interested in it, and it was interesting to see quickly, but personally I think I don't need to see it again.
